Me and Lyle have been movie fiends for the last few weeks. Renting alot and going to Canal Place (Thanks, WTUL!!)
Last night we saw My Summer of Love, a nice coming of age lesbian love story.
Very understated, subtle, and realistic, . Basically it was the movie "High Art" could've been if a little effort had been put into in-depth character development. That was on cable recently and I tried to watch it for a second time, but the script just lays there, with less meat on its bones than poor Ally Sheedy herself. She deserves better scripts than that. I'm rooting for her to make another "comeback."
"Batman" is a noble effort to make a more intelligent superhero sequel, but
it just doesn't deliver the goods. It tries to straddle the line between serious film and fun action flick and ends up with neither. Christian Bale did a good job however.
The Anniversary Party is an excellent ensemble comedy/drama written and directed by Jennifer Jason Lee and Alan Cumming, that English guy from Spy Kids. Jennifer should continue to direct and write, cuz her acting has gone down the tubes (her crying scene is atrocious) But the script is really funny & insightful.
Saw 2 great documentaries, "The Weather Underground" about 70's radical hippie terrorists, and "How to Draw a Bunny" which is about enigmatic cartoonist Ray Johnson, who killed himself as his last work of performance art. The girl at Major Video asked me if it was really an instructional video to learn to draw bunnies. I told her "I hope so because I can't seem to get the ears right."
In Good Company and Sisterhood of Travelling Pants were predictably so-so.
Herbie Fully Loaded was dark and disturbing. Actually it was pretty funny and not bad at all.Matt Dillon was hilarious.
Madagascar was disappointing.
Crash was good.
Criminal was OK, John C Reilly and Maggie Gullynhaal were great in it.
Bliss was lame (killed Cheryl Lee's career.)
Closer was better than expected, even Julia Roberts did a good job.
Lyle loved Beyond Borders and Before Sunset, I missed them both.
Well there were lots more but I gotta get to bed...CYA everybody.
BTW, we are going hiking for the 4th of July if anyone is interested in coming.
